Put your feet first
Did you know if you walk 10,000 steps in one day the average adults’ foot will shift the weight of a blue whale! That’s a lot of work! So how can you make sure your feet can do the distance?
Podiatrist Kelly Fuller is a good friend of Heart Foundation Walking and has passed on some expert tips on looking after your feet.
- Properly fitting shoes is the key to comfort while walking. Always visit a retailer that specialises in fitting shoes. Making sure you are fitted to the right size, width and depth of shoe is important and also selecting the right shoe for the activity you are undertaking.
- Shoes have a mileage just like tyres on our car. Keeping and eye on wear and tear on your shoes will ensure you are staying comfortable. Making sure your tread on your shoes isn’t worn will help prevent tripping or slipping on surfaces. If you notice your feet aren’t as comfortable in your shoes as they once were, it is time for an update.
- Sweaty feet can lead to blisters as well as fungal infections like athletes foot. Wearing natural fibre socks eg: cotton rich keeps your feet dryer and will help prevent these common painful conditions in walkers.
If you have any concerns with your feet it is best to chat to your GP about a referral to a Podiatrist.
