Walking together for Women's Health

Walking together for Women’s Health

In September, Heart Foundation Walking is calling upon women to hit the pavement to improve their heart health.

Did you know that heart disease is Australia’s leading cause of death for women?  Every day, 22 women lose their lives to the condition.

A enormous 90% of women have one risk factor for heart disease, with 50% having two or more risk factors.

Not getting enough physical activity can increase a woman’s risk of heart disease – the good news is, you can do something about this.  Getting out and walking is a fantastic way to boost not only your physical health but also your mental and emotional wellbeing.  Regular physical activity such as walking, can also reduce your risk of heart disease by 35%.  It also happens to be the most popular non-sport related activity for women in Australia!

So that’s why we’re Walking together for Women’s Health in September.

Get involved

  • Women’s Health Week (2-6 September)

Heart Foundation Walking is proud to be a community supporter of the biggest national event dedicated to women’s health, Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week from 2 to 6 September 2024.

Every year, Women’s Health Week brings together community groups and workplaces across the country to support women’s health and promote access to health information. Women’s Health Week is a time for women to come together, find support, and do something good for their health and wellbeing, like walking!

Heart Foundation Walking groups can get involved with Women’s Health Week by hosting a walk event to support women’s health in your community. Events can be big or small, public or private. Whether it’s a morning tea for your group, or sharing women’s health resources with each other, there are many ways to get involved in Women's Health Week.

Registered walks will receive exclusive access to order free Jean Hailes Women's Health Week bags (now sold out)  for their event. Everyone who registers will also receive access to posters, bunting and social media tiles. You can also order hard copy posters or postcards from the Jean Hailes shop.

To support your Women’s Health Week event, Jean Hailes also has free health resources like fact sheets, charts and checklists available on their website to download, print and share with women in your community. Translated fact sheets in 19 languages other than English are also available.

  • Join an event or try a local walking group

Visit the Heart Foundation Walking Eventbrite page to view Women’s Health Week events across the country.

If there isn’t an event near you, you might like to try out a local Heart Foundation Walking group near you.  Search for your nearest group, and get in touch with the volunteer Walk Organiser if you’d like to find out more before you turn up.  Many groups enjoy a social coffee catch up after their walk, and all groups are free to join!

  • Sign up to a Heart Foundation Walking group and win.

Women who register to a Heart Foundation Walking group or start their own group during the month of September will automatically go into the draw to win one of five $100 VISA gift cards.   Stay tuned for more information on this incentive, and terms and conditions.

Be sure to rally up the females in your life, and let’s Walk Together for Women’s Health!
