A Ramble Amongst the Remnant River Red Gums

Monday 11 July 2022

On a chilly Monday morning, a small group of walkers enjoyed a meander through Gresswell Forest in Bundoora, just over 20kms north-east of Melbourne.

Our walk was led by Parks Victoria volunteer Gordon, whose passion and commitment for Gresswell spans as far and beyond the 70 hectares of River Red Gum woodlands and Grassy woodlands that make up the reserve.

Having lived only a short distance away from the park for over 60 years, Gordon was also able to share some local history and stories of how things were.  Walkers were keen to hear all about the native flora and wildlife whilst on our walk, however we didn’t spot any of the grey kangaroos that call Gresswell Forest home.  Early mornings and dusk are the best times to view a roo or two we were told!

Our 45-minute walk was only a taste of what was on offer, with multiple trails that connect all around the park.  Our morning walk was kissed with dappled sunlight, making it particularly beautiful at that time of day.  The trails were wide and flat, and it was heartening to see families enjoying some nature play too.

Parks Victoria offer free guided walks every fortnight at 10am on Sunday mornings at Gresswell Forest.  Find more information here.
